About This Place

Sabores do Tejo is a charming espresso bar, pastry shop, restaurant, and snack bar nestled in the heart of Almada, Portugal. This beloved local gem effortlessly combines the casual warmth of a neighborhood café with the rich culinary heritage of Portuguese flavors, making it a must-visit spot for anyone craving authentic tastes in a welcoming atmosphere.

Stepping into Sabores do Tejo is like stepping into a friendly corner of Portuguese life. The inviting aroma of freshly brewed caffè and bica fills the air, setting the tone for an unforgettable culinary experience. Whether you arrive early for breakfast or later for a relaxed snack or meal, the menu offers a delightful variety of options that satisfy a wide range of cravings.

From the tender, savory Snails to the flavorful and iconic Bifana sandwich, every dish is crafted with care and tradition. The Pernas de Frango (chicken drumsticks) are a crispy, juicy treat that pairs wonderfully with a cold Sagres beer, while the Vitela de Jardineira showcases rich, slow-cooked veal in a comforting, rustic style. For a lighter bite, the selection of toasts like the cheesy Tosta Com Queso or the mixed Toast Gemischt brings simple yet satisfying flavors to the table.

Beyond the savory, the sweet offerings at Sabores do Tejo are equally compelling. The Eclair and the famously flaky Pasteis—praised by patrons—invite you to indulge your sweet tooth while enjoying the vibrant neighborhood vibe from the spacious open-air terrace. This terrace catches the morning and midday sun perfectly, creating a relaxed and bright environment that feels both intimate and lively.

But Sabores do Tejo isn’t just about the food and drink — it’s about the overall experience. As several visitors have noted, the staff here truly elevate the dining experience with their genuine warmth and attentive service. One guest described the waiters as “first class, helpful, smiling and accommodating,” making every visitor feel like a welcomed friend. Another highlighted the mix of Portuguese charm and English-speaking staff, which ensures all guests feel comfortable and well taken care of.

What resonates most about Sabores do Tejo is its authenticity. This is not a tourist trap but a genuine local haunt where neighbors gather for a cold Sagres, a delicious breakfast, or an afternoon coffee break. The prices are refreshingly reasonable, making it an accessible indulgence whether you are a casual passerby or a devoted regular. One visitor loved it as “the kind of place locals hang with friends,” while another praised the coffee as “prepared with love.”

Whether you’re craving a powerful espresso, a traditional Portuguese snack, or a relaxing spot to watch the world go by, Sabores do Tejo promises to deliver both great flavors and a heartfelt experience that captures the soul of Almada.

Quaint local spot for a beer and people watching. We didn’t see many other tourists. Seems like the kind of place locals hang with friends. Two bottles of Sagres were 3.2€.

Very friendly staff, English speaking, coffee was prepared with love, the location is top, with its.huge open air terrace toward the morning and noon sun, the Pasteis were incredibly good too. No need for a fancy place, this neighborhood bat has it all !

Amazing pastry! Love the pasteis de nata here. Best I could find around Lisbon. The outside is super crispy and the inside is creamy with lots of custard cream, services is nice and friendly, so if you have the opportunity to stop here for a coffee, coffee, and a nice neck, I totally recommend

Good place for a quick lunch or coffee after getting off the ferry. Don't expect smiles but efficient staff and good value. Not sure why all the tourists in the reviews are complaining about the staff not speaking English... you are in Portugal you cannot expect everyone to speak your language. Learn a few basic words or just go to the counter and point at the menu on the wall to order.
